Makeup For Beginners

LILY ASKS: hey Clancy!!! i really want to get into make up (im 13) , but i have no idea what to start with. I was wondering if you could give me some advice! Thx! and i love your youtube channel and blog!!!!! -Lily

Thanks for your question, Lily!

First of all, I think 13 is a great age to start experimenting with makeup! (Although, of course, there is no right age.) I would say when you first start getting into makeup there are really only products that you should use right off the bat.

1. Mascara – This is a really simple makeup product that really makes a huge difference in one’s appearance, while still being natural. My favorite drugstore mascara is CoverGirl’s Lash Blast (orange tube) and my favorite high-end mascara is Benefit’s They’re Real.

2. Tinted Moisturizer/BB Cream – Rather than go directly into a full coverage foundation, I think that a BB cream or tinted moisturizer would be perfect for beginners. Both are much more natural and light than foundation (BB cream is lighter than tinted moisturizer), but still give a bit of coverage to the skin. I used to use Physician’s Formula’s tinted moisturizer, which is drugstore, and Laura Mercier makes great skin products for high end.

3. Powder – I think that it is important to set all liquid product you put on your face so that it appears natural and matte. If you’re a beginner, I would personally recommend a translucent powder so that it appears more natural. Revlon, Maybelline, and Rimmel are all great drugstore picks and Laura Mercier’s translucent powder is an amazing high-end product.

4. Blush – Lastly, I think a pretty pink blush would be a perfect way to finish off the look. It adds a certain glow/finishing touch to any face! There are so many blushes to choose from, but my favorite would have to be Coralista by Benefit.

Obviously if you want to wear eye shadow and liner and bronzer, then that is your choice. Personally, however, I think it’s good to start light and then build it up as you get more comfortable. Hope this helped!

  1. You give great advice! I think my cousins (ages 14&15) will definitely take these tips into consideration. I’m only 12 but I will be turning 13 soon and I can’t wait to Start experimenting with makeup (although I do use mascara and light coloured eyeshadow).
