Ever since I can remember, I have absolutely loved dogs. It has always been clear in my mind that I will adopt a dog of my own the second I move into an apartment, and I will always have at least one dog. (Part of me really wants 2!)
Within the past few years, however, I have been noticing that I get itchy and break out into hives whenever I cuddle with my dog. After laying with her for just a few minutes, my eyes are the color of a firetruck. (As we speak, I currently have a nice set of hives on my neck from petting my dog for just 2 or 3 minutes…) Anyway, it always raised a red flag, but I kind of ignored it. After all, I love my dog. A month ago, however, an allergy test confirmed what I already knew: I am allergic to dogs.
While I would never give my dog away or even think of doing so, I know that in the future it’s just not going to be good for me to have a regular dog. Do I really want to live each and every day of my life in such discomfort? Or feel like I can’t even pet, and love, my very own dog? It wouldn’t be fair for me. It wouldn’t be fair for him/her. It just wouldn’t be fair.
That’s where hypoallergenic dogs come in…
Apparently there are quite a few breeds that are “hypoallergenic” and don’t affect those who are allergic to dogs. When I found this out I got SO excited.
…Until I saw the selection.
Honestly, I’ve just always wanted a boxer (which is the type of dog I currently have) and none of the dogs look even remotely similar. Most of them are small and the ones that aren’t just don’t meet my standards. Or so I thought.
Today, I was browsing through the dog websites, as I do practically weekly, and I realized that I don’t care what the dog looks like. Not completely. At the end of the day, I would seriously love a dog that looked like a mop. It’s their temperament and personality and lovableness that truly matter.
As of now I am interested in 2 dogs in particular.
The first is the Giant Schnauzer and the second is the Irish Setter, pictured below respectively.
Looks-wise, they’re honestly not my type, but I don’t see myself loving either of them any less than, say, a boxer. And actually, they are so cute!
If you have any recommendations for a hypoallergenic dog, leave it below! I would love to hear it.
And I know it might seem so strange that I’m already planning out my future dogs, but I just love them so much!
